Piano Lessons For Adults

Congratulations! If you're visiting this page it's most likely because you've taken the first step towards the joy of playing the piano.

It might seem like a small step, but I know from having taught many adults that it's a big deal.
Piano Lessons for Adults

I Listen. I Observe. I Adapt.

STEP 1
My first step is to ask you a lot of questions and to LISTEN carefully:
  1. What do you want to achieve? What's the end goal?
  2. What made you decide to pursue playing now?
  3. What is your musical history, if any?
  4. Did you have a teacher growing up who you loved. Or, a teacher that you didn't much like?
  5. What kind of music do you listen to?
  6. Are there any physical challenges I should know about that would help me to help you better?
  7. What are your expectations for having private lessons?
...and the list goes on.

STEP 2
Create a plan for you to achieve your goals. OBSERVE how you're playing and how you react to the topics we cover.

Step 3
Reassess and ADAPT if needed. More questions:
  1. How do you think your lessons are going?
  2. Are you happy with your progress?
  3. Is there anything that I can do differently to help you better?

What you can expect from me:

  • Well prepared
  • Reliability
  • Patience
  • Kindness
  • Encouraging
  • Lighthearted, informal interaction.
  • Experience and thoroughness.

Concerns I often hear from new adult students:

"Will I have to use piano books intended for little kids?"
[No. I use method books especially written for adults.]

"I'm new to piano. Will it take me years to play and if so am I doomed to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars and other nursery rhymes?"
[Although the pace that a student learns differs from person to person, most of my beginner adults are playing music that they like with only a few weeks of lessons.]

"I do some traveling for work. What if I haven't practiced"
[I promise you that our lessons together will be productive even if you haven't practiced. This is common since adults have a lot of responsibilities.]

"Will I have to play scales like my childhood teacher made it play?"
[Lol. No. I will not insist you play scales. However, understanding why scales are important to music is concept that I'll teach you.]

"Will I have to play classical music because I don't like classical music."
[No. Generally, I never ask my adult students learn any songs they don't like. The method books I use introduces a few pieces that have a "classical" sound, but most pieces are traditional folk music, jazz inspired pieces and original piano pieces composed specifically for your adult piano book.]
